The Drug Revolution
During the 1960's many scare tactics were used to discourage kids and teens from trying drugs, especially marijuana. Many of the things that people said about drugs were not true, but they got the job done. However during the late 1970's these tactics gave way to contradictory messages from the media. Drugs were glamorized and the amount of people who tried illegal drugs grew rapidly. Many Americans began to see the problem with drug use, and in 1978 66% of Americans said marijuana was a serious problem in nearby middle or high schools. 35% said the same thing about worse drugs such as cocaine. While more people had tried marijuana and other drugs, the acceptance of it was still slow. Only 21% of people said they would welcome an increased acceptance of marijuana. As you probably know, the use of marijuana and other illegal drugs has grown a lot since then, and marijuana has actually become legal in certain states. http://www.gallup.com/poll/6331/decades-drug-use-data-from-60s-70s.aspx
